“Elegant and expressive, this white offers lemon curd, tropical fruit, almond and white blossom notes, backed by vanilla, baking spice and fennel seed accents that just go on and on. Inviting in texture, with a long, lingering finish. Drink now through 2028.”

“Bright straw-yellow. Fresh orchard and pit fruits, buttered toast, vanilla, orange zest and a hint of jasmine on the expansive nose. Silky in texture and energetic in the mouth, offering intense white peach, pear nectar and honeysuckle flavors that pick up a suggestion of smokiness with aeration. Fleshy and well-concentrated but lively as well, finishing very long and spicy, with solid thrust and a repeating vanilla note.”

“A white with pretty vanilla, toasted-wood, cooked-apple and lemon character. Medium to full body, creamy texture and a flavorful finish. One of the benchmark whites for Rioja. 16 months in French oak and so balanced. Drink or hold.”

“I was really looking forward to the 2016 Capellanía, the white that inherited the tradition of long aging in barrel that used to be the norm in Rioja until the 1980s. It's structured, and they strive for aging potential while keeping some of the varietal character. It comes from a plot on the Ygay property that gives the wine its name; it's their highest plot at 485 meters in altitude. The grapes were picked the 3rd and 4th of October from the six hectares, and the must from pressing the clusters fermented at 10 degrees Celsius in stainless steel. And without going through malolactic, the wine was put in mostly new oak barrels, where it matured for 16 months, and then it was kept in concrete until bottling. It has 13.5% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity, and it comes through as very dry. The wine is still quite oaky, but I consider this a wine for the medium and long term (I'm still waiting for my 2004s!); but after a couple of hours in the glass, it felt a lot more harmonious. The palate is textured, rich and serious, with a chalky sensation and a long, dry and tasty, almost salty finish. This should make a nice bottle of aged white Rioja.”
Overview
The Cebrián-Sagarriga family, who in 1983 acquired the winery, established in 1852, has a distinct winemaking philosophy that is founded in the pursuit of quality and excellence through tradition and innovation.
Capellanía is made solely from viura grapes from the winery's 14.8-acre Capellanía vineyard, originally planted in 1945 and located on a plateau at 485 meters, the highest altitude of the 741-acre Ygay Estate in Rioja Alta. A deep golden color, its complex aroma and rich taste are the hallmarks of this world famous white wine.
Capellanía comes out as the bridge between the complexity of past wines with extended oak aging periods, and the cleanliness, freshness and defining style of the current wines. In the search for less oak influence, Capellania is the updated version of the historic white wines of Marqués de Murrieta which traditionally went through decades of oak aging.
Winemaking
After a manual harvest, grapes are carefully crushed and after a short skin contact they are gently pressed in a vertical press. This is a gentle and slow process that favors the extraction of all the aromatic potential from the low-yield viura grapes. The juice is then settled and fermented in a temperature-controlled stainless steel tank for 24 days.
Food Pairing
Duck mi-cuit, bitter orange marmalade and ginger or grilled foie gras with warmed red fruits. It is recommended to decant the wine 15 minutes before serving to let it breathe and show its full aromatic potential. Best served between 57°and 59°F.
